  2. Not sure what did .... a Banglorean by upbringing." mean. Not a single Kannada movie reviewed. LOL. Probably below your standards.

    1. Santhosh, it's not that Kannada films are below my standard. It's just that I've lost touch with Kannada films. And no Kannadiga friends to recommend films either. I've fond memories of films like Ranganayaki and Vamsavriksha and fainter memories of Nagarahavu, Gejjepooje, etc. And while I've heard some good things about films like U-Turn, I don't have any way of sourcing them here.

  3. p.s. And Banglorean by upbringing meant that I did my schooling in Bangalore. Also, you could have asked me about reviewing Kannada films without being snarky about it. Civility doesn't cost you anything.

  4. Hi Ma'm, Thanks for taking time and responding. Don't get me wrong. Kannada movies with a history of over 70 years, I opine doesn't get the due it deserves and is sometimes annoying. My comment intended to be more inquisitive and certainly not snarky. Excuse my language, if you felt so.

Most Kannadigas (esp from cities like Mangalore, Mysore, Bangalore) appreciate good cinema irrespective of the language and I would request people to be open minded with Kannada Cinema.
You have a forum here that would help and your reviews would probably incite interests of many non kannadigas.

Not sure of your grasp of Kannada and if the movies requires subtitling.
If you are not specific of the period and subtitles, A bunch of good movies mostly on your tube
-- Shankar Nag movies like "Minchina oota", "Accident", "Ondanondu Kaladalli".
-- Rajkumar movies like "Nandi", "Kamanabillu", "bangarada manusya", "Sanadi Appanna", "Kasturi Nivasa", "doorada betta".
-- some recent movies like "Rangi Taranga", "Lucia", "Ullidavaru Kandante","kaddipuddi","Amrutha Varshini","Mungaru Male,"Godhi Banna Sadharna Maikattu".

    Thanks
    Santhosh

    1. Thank you for clarifying, Santhosh, and I agree that Kannada movies don't get their due. But the industry had stagnated in between, though it's seeing resurgence again from what I read.

I would absolutely love recommendations of good films, especially the newer ones. I must confess sheepishly that the one film I've watched from the ones you posted is Ondanondy Kaladalli. And I have a faint recollection of Bangarada Manusya but I can't be too sure.

I can still read and write Kannada, but my spoken Kannada has rusted for lack of use. I'm hoping it will come back when I begin to watch Kannada movies regularly. If I can source these, I defintely will watch them, with or without subtitles. Thank you for these recommendations.

    2. Happy to know that you can read and write Kannada. I am from Hubli, North Karnataka. In 1950s, 1960s, or evn 1970s, Hindi films were ruling there and we know more about Hindi than the Kannada. Now, times have changed. Great films are made in Kannada. You must see Mungaru Male which kept, it seems, even Hindi films away from audience for long time and it was difficult to release Hindi films. I saw, with many Kannada families, that film in Chennai where it was released quite late in Casino.
